Machi Steering Council signed Future Internet Vision 2020

The meeting was held in REUNA and with videoconference with University of Atacama

Discussed a work plan for 2011

A gateway to internationalization

Thanks to the visit of the coordinator of the international cooperation project FIRST, Mr. Antonio Alfaro, a portion of the Steering Council of the first Chilean Technology Platform, Machi Future Internet, met in the office of REUNA to sign the Vision 2020 and to review the 2011 work plan.

The signature of the Machi Future Internet Vision document marked the formal start of this community of entrepreneurs, researchers and government officials which goal is to unite interests to strengthen R&D activities with the European Union. Machi Future Internet community is a mirror of similar groups in Europe that covers several thematic areas, known as European Technology Platforms (ETP). There are ETPs covering the most diverse subjects: energy, water, transportation, future internet, software, mobile communications, etc. Since Machi emerged as an initiative of the FIRST project, established by the European Commission, the direct benefit for its members is the relationship with European counterparts who share similar interests, thus Machi has been established as a gateway to internationalization.

Between April and May, Machi members will define a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) to identify the technological priorities in which Chile has an interest to develop R&D activities and which, in turn, are areas where Europe has an interest to work in. Mr. Alfaro explains: The SRA production is a way of positioning Machi with companies and research centers of the European Union as a reliable organization because it means that Chile has a global strategy and knows where to go.

Machi Future Internet is constituted by working groups led by Chilean businessmen and researchers:

• Nessi Chile Group: Led by Mario Bruno Andrade from the University of Playa Ancha and Pablo Caroca from GECHS association. This is the largest group and it is already defining the priorities of the Software and Services in Chile.

• Artemis Chile Group: Led by Gerardo Rivas from AIE association. Artemis covers embedded systems. Several companies are already listed and actively working.

• EPoSS Chile Group: Led by Hector Torres of ProteinLab. This is one of the smaller groups in terms of numbers, but not in terms of potential: Internet of Things, Smart Cities are just some of the topics already covered and which are the future.

•eMobility Chile Group: Led by Hugo Durney from University Tecnológica Metropolitana. Comprises mobile and wireless communications, one of the areas with more progress in recent years.

• A fifth group called NEM Chile which includes the Electronic Media Network, an area that gathers content creators with telecommunications.

Supported by FIRST project European partners, Machi will become more concrete when translating the SRA technological lines into an implementation roadmap. This means that companies and universities / research centers will be able to propose ideas for projects in order to collaborate with the European Union. The networking with European counterparts will make international cooperation easier.
